Brusselle’s advanced steering gear and powerpacks, designed for reliability and optimal performance, are robust and meet the class requirements associated with systems steering the rudder of a seafaring vessel. Our steering gear, available with both single and double-acting cylinders, are compact and come with matching custom-made hydraulic units.

Electro-hydraulic steering gear with double-acting cylinders
Over the past decades, Brusselle has developed steering gears with double-acting cylinders. These devices are compact, and the cylinders are fully redundant. This type of device can be supplied in both hydraulic (PTO) and electro-hydraulic versions. Models are available for ships with 1 rudder and for multiple rudder configurations, with a connecting rod mechanically linking the 2 tillers together.
This type of steering gear can deliver torques up to 800 kNm and achieve rudder angles up to 2 x 65°. Moreover, all machines comply with the regulations of the classification applicable to the respective vessel (BV, LROS, DNV, GL, CCS…).
All steering gears can be equipped with various optional extensions, such as electric starter cabinets, control and alarm systems, integrated upper rudder carrier bearings, electric rudder angle indicators, etc.

The conventional Brusselle steering gear, equipped with single-acting cylinders, enjoy a highly reliable reputation in terms of robustness, durability, and quality. Installations are available for both single rudder and multiple rudder configurations. They can be supplied in manual versions with hydraulic support for smaller vessels, as well as in hydraulic (PTO) and electric-hydraulic versions for larger vessels.
For vessels where space in the steering gear room is limited, we offer a compact steering gear, with an integrated hydraulic unit and a built-in upper rudder carrier bearing. All steering gear can be equipped with various optional extensions, including electric starter cabinets, control and alarm systems, electric rudder angle indicators, etc.
This type of steering gear can deliver torques up to 2500 kNm and achieve rudder angles up to 2 x 45°. Moreover, all machines comply with the regulations of the classification applicable to the respective vessel (BV, LROS, DNV, GL, CCS…).

The hydraulic units or powerpacks, often abbreviated as HPU, are custom-made for all types of Brusselle steering gears, always in accordance with the applicable classification regulations (BV, LROS, DNV, GL, CCS…). When electrically driven pumps are installed, electric starter cabinets can be provided. These starter cabinets include controls for starting/stopping the pumps and handle the requested alarms.
The powerpack includes 2 hydraulic pumps, each driven by an electric motor equipped with standby heating, valve blocks, relief valves, double or triple oil tank (fully redundant) with various compartments, associated filters, alarms, valves, …
In most cases, Brusselle also provides the starter cabinets for the pumps. The cabinets are equipped to handle starting and stopping and alarm signals, but this excludes valve operation and integration with the Follow Up system and the auto- and gyro-pilot. The cabinets can be supplied as separate units or installed on the frame of the powerpack.
